Hospitality or manaaki tangata is an integral part of Maori culture. Wakatu Incorporation has invested in local tourism to service this growing industry and offers visitors a unique cultural experience. Nelson’s crystal waters, long sunshine hours, sandy beaches and National Parks are key attractions to New Zealand and international guests alike.
Sea kayaking is one of the Tasman region’s most popular tourist activities and Wakatu Incorporation runs two of the region’s largest companies. The group is developing a cultural kayaking experience that will allow visitors to learn about our Maori ancestry, cultural sights of significance and contemporary Maori cuisine and craft. The Incorporation has purchased The Barn Backpackers in Marahau, Abel Tasman. Our Whanau have owned this patch of land for centuries. Acquisition of the business will allow us to integrate accommodation and activities in the region.
Wakatu is working towards building a premium cultural resort in Marahau, but planning has been delayed whilst we investigate investment and licencing options. For more information on Marahau developments, click here.
