 Wakatū Seafood

We are the guardian of our assets and community

Toitū te marae a Tāne, toitū te marae
a Tangaroa, toitū te Iwi

When the realm of Tāne and the domain of Tangaroa are
sustained so too is the future of our people

Māori are kaitiaki (guardians) of the sea.  Our forefathers were skilled navigators and found its finest catch. They taught us to cherish our oceans to sustain and feed our grandchildren.

Today we harvest this kaimoana (seafood) with the same respect and care so that others can enjoy the succulent bounty of the deep.

Our Moana (Seafood) Sector is responsible for vertically integrated investments in the mussel and crayfish industries, together with aquaculture research and development, product development, global marketing and water space applications.

A niche player in New Zealand’s billion dollar seafood industry, Aotearoa Seafoods Ltd - a fully integrated company - cultivates, harvests and processes the country’s fourth largest production of New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels, bringing a unique seafood experience to 27 countries throughout the world.

KONO is our indigenous retail brand of New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels.  Quality is the hallmark of KONO - owned and operated by the Māori indigenous community - created for you.

Port Nicholson Fisheries (PNF) also continues the tradition of harvesting kaimoana (seafood) with respect and care, and shares with the world one of the sea’s finest gifts – New Zealand Rock Lobster (kēkēwai), also known as Crayfish.

PNF is New Zealand’s largest independent processor of Rock Lobster - live catch is flown daily to discerning markets, primarily in Asia and the United States of America.  For more information, click here.

Wakatu Incorporation totally supports New Zealand’s goal for aquaculture to become a viable $1billion sector by 2025, and is the driving force behind the proposed multi-million dollar Horoirangi Seafood and Aquaculture Centre, based in Nelson.

Horoirangi aims to fundamentally reshape New Zealand’s seafood and aquaculture industry by providing a world class scientific facility for industry to utilise research to create sustainable aquaculture businesses.
