Maori are kaitiaki (guardians) of the sea. Our forefathers were skilled navigators and found its finest catch. They taught us to cherish our oceans to sustain and feed our grandchildren.

Today we harvest this kaimoana (seafood) with the same respect and care so that others can enjoy the succulent bounty of the deep.

KONO is our indigenous retail brand of New Zealand Greenshell™ Mussels.

A niche player in New Zealand’s billion dollar seafood industry, Aotearoa Seafoods Ltd cultivates, harvests and processes New Zealand Greenshell™ mussels, bringing a special seafood experience to many countries throughout the world.

Our mussel farms are located in Marlborough Sounds - a place of outstanding beauty.  With few roads connecting the Pelorus, Queen Charlotte, Anakiwa and outer sounds, many bays and coves are seldom visited.

The deep, clean waters of the sounds provide an ideal environment for raising our mussels from spat through to harvest, with cultivation methods ensuring they grow quickly and are sand and grit-free.

Aotearoa Seafoods Ltd is the financial and management umbrella body for our mussel farming activities. We expect mussel export sales to reach $25m in the next financial year.

Marlborough Seafoods Ltd (MSL) mussel farms - comprising licences, gear and crop - has been purchased by Te Tau Ihu Kutai Ltd (T-TIK) who will develop MSL’s existing extensions and acquire future extensions from MSL as they are granted, giving us access to 143 ha of mussel farms.

When all mussel farms are developed, the situation will be:

  • Natural Bridge Seafoods Ltd (contracted farms) 27 ha
  • MSL 86 ha
  • T-TIK 30 ha
