Matangi Āwhio is a native forest on ancestral heartland within Nelson. A walkway through the site offersstunning views over the city and port.
Matangi Awhio is the site of an ancient Maori Pa and Village dating back to 1450 AD. It is now the subject of a special Nelson Walk.
Since the arrival of the ancestors after their arduous journey across the Pacific Ocean, Matangi Awhio and the surrounding area known as Nelson Haven has been central to Maori life, history and legend.
Maori legends regarding events and occurrences provide an historical timeline regarding people and their activities. In a number of instances several legends from different sources may explain the same event or geological feature. Despite the differing content, the legends provide key cross-references which provide us with remarkably precise date stamps regarding people and events.
