Wakatū is investigating the feasibility of developing a Centre for Seafood and Aquaculture Innovation on a 78 hectare area of land tucked behind Nelson’s unique Boulder Bank.  While Horoirangi is only a concept at this stage it is envisaged the establishment of this Centre will develop collaboratively and progressively over a number of years.

Wakatū’s board of directors believe the time is right to support projected growth in New Zealand aquaculture.  The New Zealand Aquaculture Strategy has targeted sales of $1 billion by 2025, similar to wine and wool export volumes, and the country was poised for exponential gains in this field.  It is essential that the aquaculture industry has a sound base to expand research and commercial opportunities to grow the industry.

New jobs, education and business opportunities are anticipated for seafood and tourism participants.

It will likely start with commercial aquaculture farming including hatcheries and research laboratories with a longer-term vision including marine/aquaculture education, hospitality and tourism facilities.  A cultural interpretation or historic centre is also a possibility.

A detailed feasibility study is being undertaken with funding assistance from Poutama Business Trust.
