Wakatū Incorporation is a special entity, rich in history and at the forefront of Māori enterprise.
Based in Nelson, New Zealand, we have over 3000 owners who are descendants of four tribes:
- Ngāti Koata
- Ngāti Rārua
- Ngāti Tama
- Te Ātiawa

Our people originally lived in Kāwhia, Marokopa and Taranaki. In the early 1800s they migrated south and settled in Te Tau Ihu o te Waka a Maui (Top of the South Island). These ancestors held authority over the Nelson-Motueka-Golden Bay lands at the time of European settlement in 1841.
The four Iwi affiliated with Wakatū are connected to five Marae in the Te Tau Ihu region.
Land is at the centre of our identity as the living generation of the Tenths Reserves legacy.
Wakatū has in excess of 10 million shares which are succeeded to and transferred amongst descendants of the original Tenths Estate landowners.
We continue to develop the capability of our whānau through education programmes, scholarships and wānanga to ensure we are well placed to protect our assets into the future.
Each year Wakatū is involved in a number of projects that enhance our owners and give substance to our collective values.
Wakatū is pleased to be able to support Māori activities that promote our community. In addition, we champion the sporting achievements of our owners at national and international levels.
This is an intergenerational plan created by our owners. It sets out our aspirations and vision for the next generation.
Wakatu is the kaitiaki of the Wai56 case that was taken to the Waitangi Tribunal in 1986.
